72 illegal taxi drivers held
Lt-Colonel Mohammed Yousif, Acting Director of Operations and Traffic Supervision at the General Directorate of Traffic, announced yesterday that the department continued to monitor drivers who transport passengers for money without licences as such illegal acts would harm the livelihood of authorised Bahraini taxi drivers.
He said 64 Asians, six Bahrainis and two Gulf nationals were arrested for illegally working as taxi drivers. They were referred to the Public Prosecution and sentenced to one month in jail and fined BD 1,000 each, in addition to deporting non-Bahrainis.
He said the department would continue with the ongoing traffic campaigns to create awareness among the taxi drivers and would not tolerate any traffic rule violations.
