App that alerts motorists of cameras draws flak

smart phone application, which notifies motorists of road safety cameras so that they can slow down to legal speeds, has come under criticism.

The Android app claims to have the location and information on all road safety cameras in Bahrain. It has over 10,000 downloads and has got high rating on Android’s play tore.

It came under heavy criticism from social activist Salman Nasser because it may aid reckless drivers. Although, its developer stated that the app was not created to promote reckless driving or speeding and asked motorists to be careful while driving.

“We are not promoting people to abuse this application to drive above the speed limits.

We just want you to be careful while driving,” the developer said.

He also stated that the app would alert the user 300 metres and 100 metres before reaching a camera. “The app works in a unique way that will keep you safe as much as possible. Once you are within 300 metres of a nearby camera you will hear

one beep sound. Once you are within 100 metres nearby you will hear three beeps sound,” the app developer said. He also urged the public to inform him if any new cameras are spotted.

However, speaking to DT News, Nasser said those who download the app were likely to misuse it. “Why download such an app? Why not just drive at a safe speed, I think these people still do not understand the importance of road safety. The traffic police are trying to improve the road safety for the benefit of the public, they should understand this first,” he said.

He urged the authorities to check the app and to block it if necessary, stating, “The authorities should take a look at it and do what is necessary.

It is worrying that the app makes it convenient for road users to over-speed until they reach the cameras. Speed limit is something always to be followed, not just where there are cameras.”

Nasser also commended on the recent efforts by the General Directorate of Traffic for their efforts in improving road safety. “They are doing a great job, strengthening the rules and enforcing the laws. Their ‘Rethink’ campaign has been a great success as well,” he said.
