BD51million worth tenders’ awarded in first quarter

The Tender and Auctions Board awarded 36 tenders worth over BD51 million during the first quarter of the current year, according to Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf. Giving the breakup figures, the minister said the tenders awarded include 12 projects in the road sector, nine for sewage development and nine in the construction sector.

He said the projects awarded come within the ministry’s action plan to implement the government’s programme to develop infrastructure, provide services that meet the aspirations and needs of citizens and contribute towards supporting the national economy, explaining that the ministry is continuing to implement projects that contribute to upgrading infrastructure and services and achieving integration with various government agencies.

Mr Khalaf pointed out that the cost of the road sector projects that were awarded during the first quarter amounted to BD19,218,697, which include the project to revamp Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Street. A road revamp project has also been awarded in Hamad Town area, which includes asphalt and civil works in various locations of the area, in addition to excavation works, constructing sidewalks, re-paving roads, installing bricks for pedestrian paths, constructing car parks and painting ground lines. A project to ease traffic congestion near Muharraq Park in Block 202 was also awarded.

The project aims to facilitate access to Airport Street and Khalifa Grand Street. Nine project tenders were awarded in the sewage development sector, valued at BD4,149,287. According to the Works Ministry, the most notable among these is the project to operate tertiary treatment plant services at Tubli Wastewater Treatment Plant, which aims to ensure continuous, cost-effective and performance-effective treatment of all quantities of water.

Mr Khalaf pointed out that the cost of the awarded buildings projects during the first quarter of this year amounts to BD7,047,704, the most prominent of which is Shaikh Abdullah bin Khalid Al Khalifa College of Islamic Studies project. The project is a revamp of an existing building consisting of three floors and converted into an educational building. A tender was also awarded for the project of preventive maintenance works for the buildings of Bahrain National Museum, Bahrain National Theatre, Bahrain Fort, the Cultural Centre and the Arts Center.

“The objective of these works is to provide preventative maintenance and fault maintenance to ensure smooth operation.” The project to develop Rashid Equestrian and Horse Racing Club in Sakhir, includes the construction of eight buildings dedicated to horse stables with a capacity of 10 horses for each stable.

The works also include the construction of eight separate flexible service buildings that include service facilities, including a horse-washing area and a track for preparation, in addition to building demolition works. Tender for Kuwait Health Centre expansion project was also awarded, which includes the partial development and renovation of the existing center, in addition to its expansion works by constructing an additional two-storeyed building on the front side of the center.

The minister explained that the total projects that were offered during the first quarter of this year numbered 36 at a total cost of BD51,420,374. In addition, 19 tenders were issued in the construction and maintenance projects sector, at a cost of BD12,829,363, while one tender was issued in the technical services sector, at a cost of BD100,000. Among the prominent projects awarded was the one to construct a roundabout on the intersection of Street 2 and Street 10, Hamala and the expansion of Shaikh Isa bin Salman Expressway.

A tender was also issued for the renovation of Tariq bin Ziyad Preparatory School for Boys, Omaima Bint Al Numan Commercial Secondary School for Girls, Abdul Rahman Al Nasser Primary Preparatory School for Boys and Omar bin Al Khattab Primary Preparatory School for Boys.
