Bahrain International Airport customs yesterday recovered 167 capsules suspected of containing narcotic substances from an Asian man, who allegedly is being used as a mule to traffic drugs into Bahrain.

Further examinations are ongoing to determine the exact contents of the capsules. The capsules were concealed inside the man’s gut to prevent detection, said the Head of the Muharraq Governorate Prosecution.

The public Prosecution said they started investigating the drug smuggling attempt based on a report from the Anti-Narcotics Department. Prosecutors interrogated the suspect, who, they said, confessed to charges pressed against him.

The suspect told prosecutors that he “swallowed the capsules at intervals to smuggle them into Bahrain in exchange for money.” The suspect is now in pretrial detention pending further investigation.

The Chief Prosecutor said they are further investigating the matter to determine the scope of criminal activity. The Public Prosecution has also initiated a judicial investigation against other suspects abroad.
