Reaffirming the age-old wisdom that all art forms directly or indirectly reflect human experiences, writer, film actor and leading expatriate cultural figure Jaya Menon is setting a stage to showcase the legendary battle between Covid-19 virus and the entire mankind.  Around 35 dancers will take part in the dance drama ‘Punarjani’ (rebirth), which will be held at 7:00 pm, tomorrow at Indian Club Bahrain.

As the pandemic gradually unspools, the event will depict how the virus took over the entire world until mankind put up a brave fight against it before establishing a greatest victory of contemporary times.  In an exclusive interaction with The Daily Tribune, Ms Jaya said the event will be a confluence of many performing art forms. “It will have both Indian and Western elements encompassing Kathak, other classical Indian performing arts, Western dance styles and upbeat cinematic dance numbers.

A lot of hard work is being invested in this event by these children and I am certain that it would convey the right message to the audience.”  She said the event will be the first of its kind in the Kingdom. “By all means, it is going to be unique. It wouldn’t be inappropriate if we divide human history into two parts - pre-pandemic and post-pandemic recovery.

The pandemic period was definitely a dark age in human history as the concept of social life, which constituted the basis of all civilisations, completely ended. On the incongruous side, it was a period of hope as mankind finally found light at the end of the tunnel in the form of vaccines, masks, social distancing and newly-developed medicines.”

Ms Jaya said the human experience in all its entirety is a blend of helplessness, on one hand, and capabilities on the other, and the dance drama is a humble attempt, packed with loads of hard work, to portray this aspect of human existence. The less-than 20 minutes event will also throw spotlight on how the virus has contributed towards bringing in a drastic change in human perspectives, thoughts and actions.  “I am of the firm belief that every artist must effectively perform his/her social role.

All art forms, in that sense, are major influencers capable of bringing required changes in social ways and thought processes. An art work or performance without any social message or inspirational drive is bound to fail.”  Ms Jaya also emphasized the element of simplicity in presentation, especially with regard to performing arts. “A commoner is our standard audience.

And if they fail to receive the right signals passed on by the performers, the latter is at fault and such performances would soon become unpopular.”    The event is a directorial and conceptual venture of Ms Jaya while Sundar Balagopal IMAC, Shyam Ramachandran and Neethu Arun have carried out the choreography.
