National strategy for self-sufficiency and food security on track

Bahrain is committed to ensuring food security and self-sufficiency in various agricultural, animal and fish products.
The Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Eng. Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf, made the assurance as he visited the General Poultry Company. Eng. Khalaf reviewed the company’s expansion project to increase the production capacity of table eggs and the strategic food stock of the Kingdom.
He was accompanied by the Undersecretary of Livestock Wealth, Dr Poultry Sami Mohamed Zainal, and company officials. The minister was briefed on the plans, programmes and projects that the company is carrying out to increase production capacity of table eggs, a key component of the national strategy for food security and self-sufficiency launched by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
The expansion project will contribute to increasing the Kingdom’s production of table eggs from 83 million in 2020 to 120 million this year. Interestingly, the project will raise the self-sufficiency rate from 20-23% to 35-45%. Located on 900,000- squaremetre land area, the project includes the construction of new breeding and production wards.
