The Court of Cassation has rejected appeals filed by two men against jail terms awarded in a drug trafficking case. The court upheld the threeyear prison terms awarded to the first defendant and a oneyear jail term handed down to the second defendant. Court files say police arrested both the men in a sting operation. Public Prosecution later cleared the second defendant of peddling and pressed only drug abuse charges.
The men fell into the police net after officers opened an investigation based on a tipoff that the duo were peddling hashish in Bahrain. Thus, an undercover agent was assigned to capture them red-handed. Accordingly, the agent contacted the first defendant with an offer to buy BD100 worth of hashish and convinced him to meet in a public place.
As agreed, the first defendant came with the second and handed over the hashish to the undercover agent as the police pounced upon them. The first defendant tried to run away but got arrested eventually. During interrogations, the second defendant confessed to his crimes and told that he was only accompanying the first defendant.
