Public enthuse over Wi-Fi in buses

Manama

The availability of Wi-Fi connectivity in public buses has turned out to be big hit in the Kingdom.

High-speed Internet available in the buses is free of charge and it is accessible without having to enter a password.

Commuters said that they used the Wi-Fi of the bus even when they were not travelling in the bus.

"When I am out and have no other way to connect to the Internet, I just go to the bus stop," said Sales executive Ebrahim Ansari.

He added that others even followed buses just to get connected to the Internet. "One of my friends needed to check his email urgently, but we did not have Internet. As he had a car, he drove on the road looking for a bus. When he got close to the bus he connected to the Internet and checked his email. I think that many people do the same and why not?"

Other key features of the new red buses include special conveniences for passengers with disability and special needs, surveillance cameras, on-bus infotainment, priority seating, area for women, families and elderly and digital destination displays in multiple languages.

A new automated ticketing system was also introduced, replacing the paper tickets with a modern, paperless smart-card alternative.
