Jail sentences for two public employees reduced on appeals

Two public employees accused of corruption have had their jail terms reduced on appeals. They were earlier sentenced to seven years in prison, but now they will serve only three years each behind bars. The duo were working at the engineering and maintenance department in the Jaffari Endowments and were charged in connection with allowing a contractor to embezzle BD68,000 by falsifying reports.
The duo’s misconduct was reported in the National Audit Office’s report for the year 2019-2020. According to court files, the suspects were responsible for submitting reports on the progress of several construction sites.
They faked several reports to allow the contractor receive BD68,000. Their wrongdoing was highlighted in the National Audit Office’s report, as a result, they were summoned by the Public Prosecution and were questioned. The personnel who discovered their wrongdoing was also questioned, following which an expert committee was formed and confirmed the crime. The suspects forged the reports linked to 26 sites under construction.
