UNESCO-King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize awards winners

The UNESCO-King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education was yesterday awarded to the winners of the 2021 edition, together with the four laureates from the 2020 and 2019 editions, after COVID-19 pandemic-induced delays.

The 2021 edition follows a theme whose importance has been highlighted by COVID-19. Winners were from 111 nominations submitted by 58 UNESCO Member States and eight NGOs.

The ceremony, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, was organised in person at UNESCO headquarters with the Ministry of Education of Bahrain. His Majesty delegated Dr Majid Bin Ali Al-Nuaimi, the Minister of Education, to attend the ceremony and hand out prizes.

Funded by Bahrain and established in 2005, the award recognises and advocates for the innovative use of digital technologies to enhance teaching, learning, and overall education performance. Each laureate receives US$ 25,000 for their use of technology to enable inclusive crisis-resilient learning systems.

The event witnessed the presence of Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for the Education, Ambassador Santiago Irazabal Mourao, the President of the 41st General Conference, senior officials, ambassadors, journalists, researchers, specialists in information and communication technology, and Bahraini students at French universities.

Dr Al Nuaimi conveyed greetings and the congratulations of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and His Royal High ness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to the award jury, organisers and the winners.

UNESCO awards four laureates from 2020 and 2019 editions

Dr Majid Bin Ali Al-Nuaimi, the Minister of Education, affirmed support for the organisation, praising the efforts of UNESCO in all circumstances, including during the pandemic and reviewed Bahrain’s efforts to continue education through virtual platforms.

Dr Al Nuaimi and the Assistant Director-General of the Education Sector of UNESCO handed over the awards. The winners: The Theme of the 2019 award was ‘The use of Artificial Intelligence to innovate education, learning and teaching’.

The call for nominations was launched in 2019, and the two laureates, Letrus, Brazil and Change Dyslexia, Spain, were announced in 2020. The Theme of the 2020 award was ‘The use of Artificial Intelligence to enhance the continuity and quality of learning’.

The call for nominations was launched in 2020. The two laureates, “One College Student Per Village” project, Open University of China and “Ville”, Centre for Learning Analytics, University of Turku, Finland, were announced in 2021.

The call for nominations was launched in 2021, and the two laureates are: “Initiatives for Inclusive and Accessible Education”, Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET), National Council for Educational Research and Training, India and “Ubongo Digital Educational Programme”, Ubongo International, the United Republic of Tanzania.

Award winners gave a brief presentation of their initiatives at the ceremony. The education minister presented a souvenir to the Director-General of UNESCO.
