Passport theft leaves cancer patient in a fix in Bahrain

cancer patient has been stranded in the Kingdom after an unknown person misused his passport to leave Bahrain. The ‘mischievous act’ has left Abubakkar, a cancer patient, from the south Indian state of Kerala high and dry as he is spending his days in the Kingdom in misery.

He had been residing illegally in Bahrain for almost one-and-a-half years. Meanwhile, he noticed some changes in his tongue about eight months ago. Earlier, he neglected it assuming that it might be some fungus infection. But the doctors diagnosed him with throat cancer about three months ago. By the time, his condition began deteriorating.

Meanwhile, he approached the Indian Embassy, seeking help to go back to his homeland. Subsequently, the embassy issued him an out-pass for his departure. When he approached the immigration department, he was informed that someone had already travelled using the passport of Abubakkar. Upon further enquiry, the officials said that the person had left Bahrain in April 2014, using Abubakkar’s passport.

According to Abubakkar, he had kept his passport in a safe place and was staying in another place. But someone had managed to steal the passport.

Currently, he is undergoing medical treatment at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC). Members of Cancer Care Group Bahrain are helping him for his treatment. Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF) members are also supporting him to clear his immigration formalities.

According to social worker K.T. Salim, the doctors at SMC said Abubakkar had all the chances of recovery if he underwent surgery and other necessary treatments at the earliest. But the misuse of passport has posed him a big hurdle.

Salim said the immigration authorities asked the sponsor of Abubakkar to meet them. The ICRF members immediately contacted the sponsor, who responded positively by approaching the immigration authorities. The sponsor has extended all her support in the issue. “Hopefully, Abubakkar will reach India soon,” added the social worker.
