The High Criminal Court sentenced a 28-year-old Asian man to five years in prison, a fine of BD3,000, and deportation following an attempt to smuggle drugs by hiding them between his legs. When the accused arrived in Bahrain from his home country, he showed worried behaviour that prompted him to be flagged as soon as he stepped off the plane.
He was directed to the red lane for inspection as soon as he reached the customs officer. The accused was taken to the inspection room after nothing was found in his bag. A substance was concealed in a black cloth skillfully tied with rubber around his legs. The accused said he was forced to carry the substance by a countryman to whom he owed money. According to the investigation, the confiscated material weighed 3,500 grams and the accused planned to deliver it to another contact in a hotel.
Investigations further revealed that the accused was aware of the seized substance, which was brought with the intent of distributing and marketing it in Bahrain for lucrative gain, given his involvement in a narcotics smuggling network. Public Prosecution attributed to the accused that on April 20, 2022 he brought a psychotropic drug with the intent of unauthorised dealing, as well as possessing and obtaining a psychotropic substance with intent to use in conditions other than those authorised by law.
