An illegal food depot operating out of a private residence in Hamad Town was raided and shut down by the Inspection Department within the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The Assistant Undersecretary for Control and Resources, Abdul Aziz Al-Ashraf, said they raided the house after receiving information regarding large trucks offloading food commodities at the house time and again.
Further investigation proved the existence of a storage depot for foodstuffs in the house operating without a license. "We also obtained a search warrant from the Public Prosecution to enter the house."
The raid was in the presence of specialists from the Northern Governorate Police Directorate. Officers said they found food materials in large quantities in all rooms on the ground floor. Products seized include spices, nuts, lentils, coconut, dried figs, imported rice and others.
At least two loads reached the house per month, weighing about 25 tonnes, for redistributing to local shops. The Assistant Undersecretary said the ministry would take stringent actions against such illegal practices. He called on the public to report such suspicions through Tawasul or Inspection@moic.gov.bh.
