The Bahraini Hajj pilgrims yesterday stoned the Jamarat al-Aqaba in Mina, on the first day of Eid Al Adha, at the end of the most prominent stages of the pilgrimage this year, which is the largest during the coronavirus pandemic.

They joined thousands of pilgrims who walked to the site where they headed directly to throw the seven pebbles they had picked up earlier from the streets of Muzdalifah, at Jamarat al-Aqaba, on a model that embodies the temptation of Satan

Before throwing pebbles in Mina, the pilgrims sat and slept in the open air in Muzdalifah on prayer rugs on the sandy sidewalks, under the watchful eye of the police. The Hajj is one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world, and it is among the five pillars of Islam and every Muslim who is able to perform it must perform it at least once.

In 2019, about 2.5 million Muslims from all over the world participated in it. But this number decreased to a few thousand in 2020 and to 60,000 in 2021, as the Kingdom tries to mitigate the effects of the pandemic.

This year, the number of participants reached one million, including 850,000 from abroad, for the first time since 2019. Today, most of the Bahraini pilgrims are scheduled to finish stoning the Jamarat al-Aqaba on the 12th day and leave Mina before heading towards the Grand Mosque in Makkah to circumambulate the ancient house, after the convoys of pilgrims have completed their rituals with its pillars, duties and obligations.

The gathering of Bahraini pilgrims over the last two days went over without a hitch, due to the Saudi authorities’ integrated and tight organisation. Bahrain’s Hajj Mission Head Shaikh Adnan bin Abdullah Al Qattan commended Saudi Arabia for making great efforts to serve the pilgrims and made their journey of faith more comfortable and easier.
