In a tragic incident that sent shockwaves across Bahrain yesterday (July 13) evening, an expatriate drowned following an unusual sequence of events. According to sources, the deceased, identified as Sreejith Gopalakrishnan Nair, was driving over Sitra Causeway when he lost control of the car and fell into the sea.

"Sreejith managed to successfully get out of the submerging car and swam to safety," the source said. However, he swam back, apparently to retrieve some valuables. But this time luck was not on his side as he surrendered to the waves."

Although rescue teams from the Civil Defence instantly stepped into action, the victim could not be saved from drowning. The 42-year-old businessman hails from Pathanamthitta district in the south Indian state of Kerala. Sreejith’s immediate survivors include wife and three children, who are also residents here.

Police have begun a thorough probe into the incident. The body is being kept at Salmaniya Medical Complex morgue. Indian community leaders are in their best efforts to fly the body of the deceased home at the earliest.
