A team of surgeons from the King Hamad University Hospital, led by Dr Hisham Bakri, removed a malignant tumour weighing nearly 1 kg from the abdomen of a 40-year-old man. Dr Hisham Bakri, the Consultant General and Laparoscopic Surgery and Gastrointestinal surgery, said the patient approached the hospital complaining of pain and flatulence in the abdomen, vomiting and severe weight gain.
After clinical investigation, doctors diagnosed him with a malignant tumour, pushing his intestines aside that required immediate removal. Clinical and CT scans revealed an unusual mass with dimensions 20 X 11 X 10 cm in the posterior right abdomen.
After discussions with the National Cancer Council to develop an appropriate treatment plan, the hospital formed a team. The team headed by Dr Hisham Bakri had members Dr Rani Al-Moataz Billah Al-Agha, consultant vascular surgeon, and Professor Ziad, Deputy Consultant Urologist. Dr Keith Johnson, consultant anaesthesiologist, Dr Shehab Khashaba and Dr Hassan Al-Jowder and Dr Prabhu Shankar from King Hamad University Hospital took part.
Dr Bakri said the tumour had reached the blood vessels and other parts of the abdomen, posing a threat to the patient's life. The surgery took approximately four hours and was successful without any complications.
The patient was discharged from the hospital four days after and is now in good health. Doctors said the patient does not need chemotherapy after total resection of the tumour, which is an achievement for King Hamad University Hospital.
