The Government Hospitals announced yesterday that it recorded an average of 35% increase in the number of surgeries conducted at the Salmaniya Medical complex within a month. Doctors there conducted 1,210 surgeries in 13 different medical specialities in June, a jump from 794 surgeries in July, the Department said.

The report also confirmed a drop in the patients waiting time for surgeries at the Salmaniya Medical Complex, thanks to the new mechanisms in place and the efforts of all departments to hold elective surgeries in the evenings and Saturdays. The mechanisms for elective surgeries started by mid-June this year and contributed to raising its number to 172.

The report also said that the Government is continuing efforts to formulate strategies for developing the services offered at medical facilities here, especially at the Salmaniya Medical Complex. Elective surgery does not always mean it is optional. It simply means that the surgery can be scheduled in advance. It may be a surgery that patients choose for a better quality of life, but not for a life-threatening condition.
