Bahrain will join the international community in marking World Lung Cancer Day in 2022, observed worldwide today, under the theme “Close the Care Gap”.
The World Lung Cancer Day is marked to raise awareness about lung cancer, reduce its mortality rates, support research that seeks to find a cure, educate those at risk of developing lung cancer, and increase public awareness about the harms of smoking.
Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, and claims more lives yearly than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.
According to studies, smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer, and the risk of developing it can be reduced by quitting smoking and passive smoking.
There are other risk factors, such as environmental factors, exposure to radiation, some chronic lung diseases, pre-existing cancer and others. All age groups, whether they are old or young, men or women, can develop lung cancer.
Studies and research have indicated that early detection is effective in the treatment of lung cancer. As most people do not show symptoms in the early stages of the disease, periodic lung examination is important for its prevention or early detection.
On the occasion of World Lung Cancer Day, Bahrain’s Ministry of Health is keen to hold awareness-raising events for lung cancer patients and their families, smokers and passive smokers, health workers, health associations and organisations, and all members of society in general for the aim of spreading awareness about lung cancer.
