A Bahraini woman who assisted the police in an investigation against a notorious drug kingpin has been spared drug trafficking charges by the High Criminal Court. Instead, the Court awarded her a lighter punishment of 6 months in jail on charges of drug abuse. Court files say police arrested the 42-year-old woman from the King Fahd Cause way with half a kilogram of hashish hidden in her clothes. Incidents leading to the case occurred when cops stopped her at the Causeway for a routine check-up.

Even though the woman denied carrying anything illegal, officers grew suspicious of her actions and decided to subject her to a physical inspection by a policewoman, who managed to spot several pieces of hashish from her clothes. During interrogation, the woman also confessed to working as a carrier for her friend’s husband, who turned out later a notorious drug smuggler. “The husband of my friend (the GCC national drug lord) offered me money to smuggle drugs for him,” she told interrogators.

The woman also agreed to help with the investigation. As suggested by the police officers, the woman then called the GCC man and told him that she had arrived in Bahrain. However, the man, who had already learned that the woman was in police custody, managed to flee and is absconding. Lab tests later confirmed that the woman was a drug addict.

Public prosecution, following investigation, charged the woman with smuggling drugs and drug abuse. The GCC man was tried in absentia, with the Court awarding him ten years in prison and a fine of BD3,000.
