Bahrain’s share for the crochet record
Indian women living in the Kingdom assembled yesterday at Andalus Garden to be part of the Mother India’s Crochet Queens, a social media-based group of crochet enthusiasts, who aims to set a Guinness World Record by knitting the largest crochet blanket in the world.
“This is our first meet in Bahrain. All the participants came with their blankets, which are part of the world record mission. Once the mission is accomplished these blankets will be given away to NGOs, orphanages and old age homes in India,’ said Bahrain coordinator of the vent Anu Venugopal to DT News.
The group, Mother India’s Crochet Queens was started by Chennai-based Subashri Natarajan. With the support of Indian women of all age groups from across the world, the group is working hard to finish the challenge by the end of the year.
The overseas group from the Kingdom of Bahrain has forty enthusiastic members. The group was found in the month of October 2015 and is still growing.
The team guided by of Subashri Natarajan, an MBA degree holder and an avid crocheter since the age of 10, has taken up the task of crocheting 5000 blankets measuring up to a total of 5000 square meters with the aim of setting a new world record and marking their name in the Guinness World Records.
The current record was set by South Africa in April 2015, which stands at 3377square meters.
The Group ‘Mother India’s Crochet Queens’ set up in August 2015, by Subashri comprises of nearly a 1000 Indian women from all parts of the world, aged between 8 to 85 years, all sharing the same passion for crochet. A Facebook page by the same name has been created and is already garnering interest among Indian women crocheters.
Aria wise WhatsApp groups were also created spanning all parts of India, along with USA, Gulf, Europe, and Australia etc. Area Wise coordinators are working hard at keeping a track on the numbers. While work is already underway, the group is now looking at getting sponsors for the finale event to be held in Chennai on January 26, 2016, wherein Guinness officials will fly down from London to measure the blanket and officially bestow upon the group the title of the World’s Largest Crochet Blanket by a Participating Group.
