The Philippine Embassy has successfully concluded the Buwan ng Wika (National Language Month) month-long celebration by honouring the winners of Poetry Writing and Poster Making contests at its grounds on 26 August.
The competition, which centered on the theme “Filipino at mga Katutubong Wika: Kasangkapan sa Pagtuklas at Paglikha”, was organised by the Embassy and aimed at ensuring further development, propagation and preservation of Filipino and other Philippine languages.
Ramil Alan Ramos, a high school teacher, and Jansen Eugene Caniete, grade 9 student – both of Philippine School Bahrain – won the poetry writing and poster making contests, respectively.
Speaking during the award ceremony, Charge de Affaires Anne Jalando-on Louis congratulated all the winners of the competition and their families, including those who took an active participation in the event. CDA Louis encouraged everyone on the broader understanding of the Filipino language,
“Keeping the different languages alive, help promote and feel proud in using our native language.” According to CDA Louis, this year’s theme of Buwan ng Wika is a close commitment and solidarity with UNESCO’s 2022-2032 International Decade on Indigenous Languages whose main goal is to promote the right of Indigenous People to free expression, access to education, and participation in community activities using the native language as the main requirement for keeping alive the heritage languages that are most in danger of disappearing.
Labour Attache Vicente M. Cabe, head of the panel of judges for poetry writing contest, also announced the names of Liezl Mercado and Lornalyn Penuliar as the second and third place winners, respectively.
The second and third places in poster design competition were awarded to Kathleen Ivy Araneta and Shaila San Buenaventura by the head of the panel judges of the contest, Consul Bryan Jess Baguio. The winners received cash prizes, certificates of appreciation and medical vouchers.
One of the highlights of the program was the reading of the first prize winning entry “Sulo ng Pag-asa” by Ramil Alan Ramos. During an interview, Ramos reminded his fellow Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs):
“Let us use our own language to communicate with our fellow Filipinos here in Bahrain, instill the love of language to Filipinos especially to the youth so it may flourish up to the next generations, and we must never forget to love our own language.”
In recognition of their participation as members of the panel of judges for both competitions, Vice Consul Laser Blitz Sumagaysay led the awarding of certificates to Atty. Vicente M. Cabe, Ms Marisa Cruz, Ms Melinda Nomananap, Ms Cecilia V.
