A King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) team removed the right kidney from a seven-month baby.
Led by KHUH Chief of Staff and Consultant Paediatric Surgeon Professor Martin Corbali the team performed the rare resection (nephrectomy) on the baby girl.
“The girl was suffering from severe swelling in the right side”, said Professor Corbally, noting that tests showed the presence of a 50 ml Wilms cancerous tumor in the right kidney, which is considered large compared to the age of the infant.
The baby girl first r chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor to avoid bleeding during surgery or rupture of the tumor, provided that the excision process would be carried out after six weeks.
The medical team decided to perform the surgery immediately due to the baby’s health condition and the spreading cancer in the kidney. Doctors also concluded that chemotherapy might expose the baby girl to future complications due to her age.
Surgeons performed the radical kidney resection, as the baby lost only 5 ml of blood, which is a very small percentage compared to other resections, due to the use of the latest techniques to prevent bleeding during surgery.
“The surgery was performed without any side effects and the patient recovered a few days after undergoing the surgery”, said Professor Corbally.
