Bahrain imposed anti-dumping duty on motor batteries from Turkey and India to guard local and domestic manufacturers and industries against cheap imports.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the duties on motor batteries between 32 to 225 amps capacity are effective Saturday.

The ministry, however, said it exempts AGM and EFB battery types from the duties. Duties imposed will be based on the dumping rate of the products.

“These duties follow a complaint lodged by the regional industry to the Technical Secretariat Office on the effects of dumping of imported products,” said Assistant Undersecretary for Industrial Development at the Ministry, Dr Khaled Fahad Alalawi.

Dr Alalawi said that probes found an increase in import volume from Turkey and India.

The decision also follows approval by the Cabinet of a decision by the GCC Ministerial Committee for Industry to impose anti-dumping measures to mitigate the harmful effects brought about by international trade on local and GCC-made products.

India, according to Volza’s India export data, is the largest exporter of lead-acid storage batteries to Bahrain and accounts for 5,441 shipments from 279 suppliers until the 13th of October 2021.

The report also states India, the United States and South Korea as the top three exporters of Batteries to Bahrain.

The United States accounts for 476, and South Korea at the 3rd spot with 266 shipments.

Battery export shipments from all over the world to Bahrain are 6.4K, exported by 199 Suppliers, Volza report said.

Lead-acid batteries used for starting piston engines top the exported products.
