Bahrain will back Maldives’ candidacy for membership to the UN’s top human rights body, said Foreign Minister, rejecting claims that Bahrain withdrew its candidacy.

“We have not withdrawn from the candidacy for membership of the Human Rights Council, but rather we have postponed Bahrain’s candidacy,” Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani said.

He said, “We will support the Maldives” to run for a three-year seat at the Geneva-based body in an election later this month. Elections are to take place later this month at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Bahrain had earlier said that the deferral of the candidacy “results from ongoing consultation with its geographical group”, describing that as a standard practice.

“Bahrain remains fully supportive of the Human Rights Council, to which it has been elected three times, and will continue to work with other UN member states to promote global human rights best practices,” the spokesperson had added.
