Riffa Central Market is ready for renovation, with authorities relocating affected merchants to a temporary site.

The temporary market will have the same number of stalls over an area of 1200 square meters with air-conditioning and safety requirements, said Southern Municipality in a statement yesterday.

The original market set for a total renovation to modernise its facilities had 40 vegetable stalls, 12 fish stalls, seven meat stalls and two chicken stalls, the statement said.

Authorities said they created the same number of stalls in the alternative location for the sellers. “We are maintaining the status quo, without reducing the number of stalls.”

Officials said the temporary location has air-conditioners, all safety and security measures and adheres to heat and insulation protocols. Plans also include establishing toilets for sellers and buyers and a room for guards.

Tribune had reported last year that the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture received two bids for a tender launched for Riffa Central Market renovation.

Sarab Contracting Co quoted BHDBHD 749,050.000 and Inter Lock Maintenance Construction quoted BHD 921,516.540 for the project. Works Ministry had offered a ten-month contract to finish the job.
