Bahrain MPs vote on proposal to meet Education Minister
For the first time in the contemporary parliamentary history of Bahrain, parliamentarians yesterday voted on an urgent proposal to meet a Minister.
During Parliament’s weekly meeting, majority of MPs had rejected an urgent proposal that was submitted by MPs Jamal Buhassan, Hamad Al Dossary, Mohammed Al Jowder and Jalal Kadhem Al Mahfoudh.
According to the presenters, the proposal was to meet Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi to convey to him the grievances and requests of citizens, in relation to the Ministry.
Speaking to DT News on the causes of submitting the proposal, Buhassan claimed: “The Minister refuses to meet the MPs. It is the first time ever that any Minister in Bahrain has denied an appointment to lawmakers, despite their recurrent requests.”
“It’s against the spirit of Royal Orders to shut your doors before the elected representatives of the people of Bahrain,” he commented.
Speaking on his personal experiment, Buhassan said: “I was not asking for a chance to say ‘hello’ or have a cup of tea with the Minister. It’s to discuss with him the serious problems the people of my constituency were facing.”
He said that the people had been confronting a lot of problems in their day-to-day lives and when they failed to resolve those issues on their own, they were always counting on their representatives.
“If the MPs are denied the opportunities to resolve people’s basic issues on time, where will they go? It will create resentment among the masses, which is not good for the government as well. It upsets my position before the people and I feel bad as they get the wrong impression that I did not do anything for them,” the legislator opined.
The parliamentarian claimed that he had contacted the Minister for an appointment five times during the last four months – called the Minister directly twice and three times through his office, but all attempts to reach him went in vain.
