Bahrain is planning to replace the Bahrain International Airport with a new one.

No, it’s not happening now, but when the existing airport site can no longer effectively meet Bahrain’s airport infrastructure needs, says a tender document launched for organising a study for the purpose.

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, the decision will evoke far-reaching implications - not only for the most strategic sectors in Bahrain but also for the overall economy.

The tender launched inviting firms to formulate a Strategy and Roadmap Study for implementing a new greenfield airport that will eventually replace BIA attracted four bids.

The bidding companies are: Dar Al Handash Consultants (Shair & Partners) (BHD 1,584,314.000), ADP Ingenierie -Foreign Branch (BHD 1,153,383.000), Netherlands Airport Consultants (BHD 611,380.000) and Hill International (BHD 843,150.000)

The study will be multidisciplinary and includes public policy, development strategy, technical, economic, financial, regulatory analysis, and evaluation.

The tender is for hiring a lead consultant to manage and coordinate the work of various specialist sub-consultants and act as principal advisors.

Established in 1927, BIA is the Gulf’s oldest international airport.

It has recently undergone a $1.1 billion expansion and was launched on the 28th of January 2021, boosting the airport’s capacity to 14 million passengers annually.

The new terminal features 104 counters to process arrivals, 24 self-check-in kiosks and 44 immigration counters.

What is a Greenfield Project? A greenfield project can describe any project that a team starts from scratch.

The term comes from real estate, where it conveys the image of a literal green-field site for development, undisturbed by previous construction.
