Al Dana Amphitheatre, the ideal destination for hosting live entertainment events in Bahrain, has won the People’s Choice Award 2022 from the Australian Institute Architects.

Al Dana Amphitheatre’s achievement reflects its global reputation as one of the distinguished and unique theatres at all levels, especially in architectural and engineering aspects. Aside from Al Dana Amphitheatre, this year’s People’s Choice competition included 10 projects from eight countries, namely Tianyou School in China, New Guinea Force Support Battalion (FSB) building renovation project, Business Bay in New Zealand, City of Dreams buildings in Malaysia and the Australian Pavilion at Expo 2020.

Founded in 1929 and headquartered in Melbourne, the Australian Institute Architects has more than 13,000 members worldwide. The international award aims to highlight the latest developments in the field of architecture and honour the most innovative projects by the Institute’s members globally.

The concept of Al Dana was to create an amphitheatre in the natural setting of the desert site location, respecting the nature of the surroundings, the location’s individual characteristics, such as sun paths and shadows, wind direction and terrain.

On this occasion, Shane Chalmers, CEO of Al Dana Theatre, said: “We are proud that Al Dana Theatre has received this international honour from the Australian Institute of Architects. We are very happy that Al Dana Amphitheatre has become today a world-class award-winning edifice.

This is in line with our vision and enhances the Kingdom of Bahrain’s position as a prominent entertainment destination in the region.

“We acknowledge the prominent role it plays in supporting the Bahraini economy and enhancing its growth by attracting various tourism and commercial events.”

The annual awards ceremony first edition was held in 2020, as it seeks to honour the winners in the following categories: emerging architect category, interior architecture, residential architecture, heritage architecture, and commercial architecture, in addition to public architecture.
