Bahrain joined the international community in celebrating the World Arabic Language Day yesterday. The event is observed annually on December 18 since 2012.
The date coincides with the day in 1973 that the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of the organisation.
Education Minister Dr Muhammad bin Mubarak Juma stressed that Arabic is one of the most used languages in the world.
He said that the Arabic language is clearly embodied in daily life, particularly being the language of the Holy Quran, with deep meanings and richness.
The Minister pointed out that the Ministry, through its approved curricula in public and private schools, stresses the importance of knowing and mastering the Arabic language.
“It is an essential part of the identity, culture and history of the Kingdom of Bahrain, as well as part of the cultural and human diversity in the world,” Dr Juma said.
He expressed his thanks and gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for his support and sponsorship of the educational process in the Kingdom, which enables the Education Ministry to carry out its responsibilities towards teaching the Arabic language.
The Ministry allocates many of its school and student activities and competitions to ignite the spirit of competition in mastering the Arabic language among school students.
They include activities and competitions in poetry, prose, literature, reading, rhetoric, calligraphy, composition, and so on, all of which aims to consolidate the love of the Arabic language in the hearts of students and promote national identity through them.
