Bahrain’s legislative bodies rejected and strongly condemned the resolution issued by the European Parliament regarding human rights in the Kingdom.

The Shura Council and the Council of Representatives Bureau stood behind Bahrain’s full commitment to upholding human rights principles and international standards, and protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens and residents on its territory.

They voiced dismay over the European Parliament’s disregard of the factual information provided by Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry, relying instead on oneside opinions to formulate ill-intentioned resolutions decisions that detached from reality.

In a statement, the Shura Council said Bahrain’s firm commitment to international covenants consolidates human rights, guarantees people’s rights and defines their duties, based on the constitution and national laws.

“The resolution which relied on inaccurate information, lacks objectivity and professionalism,” it said, noting that these distorted facts spread by those who seek to defame the Kingdom and harm its interests.

“Bahrain is a country of institutions and the law that heed, in compliance with the treaties and agreements that the Kingdom has signed and acceded to, especially the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” said the statement.

It commended the integrity of Bahrain’s judiciary system which provides all guarantees for the accused and convicted in various civil and criminal cases. It stressed Bahrain’s commitment to providing all information and data, and presenting them to the international community during the discussion of the human rights periodic review.

Desperate attempts

In convening for its third meeting, the Council of Representatives Bureau panel, chaired by Speaker Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam, slammed the resolution. In a statement, it said that the resolution is based on falsified and inaccurate information disseminated by those making desperate attempts that seek to damage the reputation of Bahrain and to gain the support of parties willing to accept one-sided and ill-intentioned narratives.

Baseless information and fake news, which have been constantly published and promoted by entities and people, in order to distort facts, practice duplicity and misleading, sedition and incitement, and harm the reputation of Bahrain.

It deeply deeply regretted the European Parliament’ reliance drifting one-sided reports without communicating with the representatives of the Bahraini people and the official and human rights authorities in the Kingdom to clarify the facts and expose the fallacies.

“Such decisions based on inaccurate information and disregard of facts harm relations and common interests, and violate of the principles and values of human rights, which are among the firm constants in Bahrain,” it said.

The Council of Representatives Bureau stressed the importance of respecting the law in every country, and not interfering in internal affairs, in a manner that contradicts international and parliamentary foundations and rules.

It backed the statement which was issued by the Foreign ministry regarding Bahraini citizen Abdulhadi Al Khawaja, as well as the court verdicts regarding the charges levelled against him. These include treason, attempting to overthrow the constitutional system of government, communicating with foreign countries to carry out hostile acts against the Kingdom, establishing and managing an illegal association to carry out terrorist and subversive acts.

The Bureau statement stressed Bahrain’s human rights strides and development, full commitment to the principles of human rights and international standards.
