Doctors at the Salmaniya Medical Complex yesterday successfully performed a complex and emergency surgical procedure to remove a fishing hook that penetrated the right eye of a Bahraini man and restored his vision.

The man, a hobby fisherman, SMC doctors said, sustained the rare traumatic ocular injury while angling at an undisclosed location. Doctors said they managed to save his sight, thanks to the quick response of the medical team from the Department of Ophthalmology and Anaestheiology at SMC.

Emergency surgery was conducted immediately under the team led by ophthalmologist Dr Hussein Al-Harmy, and Dr Amr Bahr from the Anesthesiology Department. The team surgically removed the hook from the eye and repaired the damaged tissue to save the vision.

Other team members include Dr Hassan Abdel-Hadi and Dr Hawra Al-Mahrous from the Ophthalmology Department and nursing staff.

Exercise extreme caution

SMC doctors advised all to take necessary precautions while using sharp tools to reduce eye injuries and complications.

Experts advise that fishing glasses should be worn not only for UV protection but also as an injury prevention strategy.
