Refusal to pay legal services fees has landed a woman in the dock after the advocate who represented her took the matter before the High Criminal Court . ‘
The lawyer told the court that the woman, his client, had agreed to pay BD700 for representing her in several Shariat courts but refused afterwards.
“After taking my services, the woman refused to pay the fees agreed,” the lawyer told the court. The advocate also presented several supporting documents to back his claim. Ruling in favour of the lawyer, however, the court limited the compensation to BD500.
“Although the pair agreed on the amount of the service, the court still has the authority to decide the just sum for the services provided after evaluating the efforts and the results of the service,” the ruling read. “Therefore, the court decides to obligate the defendant to pay BD500 to the plaintiff,” it added.
