Motorists have been advised to drive carefully due to yesterday’s rainy forecast. The General Directorate of Traffic urged the drivers to be cautious of the rain by staying in their lanes, following the speed limit and keeping a safe distance between vehicles.

As clouds in dense shades of grey covered the Kingdom’s sky yesterday, everyone waited with great anticipation and baited breath for the sounds of rain to begin. According to the meteorological department, there will be clouds and sporadic rain, which will which will result in cold temperatures overnight.

Yesterday, a maximum temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a low temperature of 16 degrees Celsius were both recorded. Speaking to The Daily Tribune, Badusha Pk, an expat and local driver, said: “Although I am excited about this weather, it is risky to drive around. It is safer to stay in the center lanes since water collects on both sides of the fast and slow lanes, especially on highways.

“When the car loses contact with the road, more accidents are likely to happen, increasing the possibility that it will hit another vehicle. “The right thing to do is to ease off the accelerator and turn the steering wheel in the direction you want to travel, even if a motorist might press the brake pedal as hard as they can, it would still cause a skid.”

Abdul Rashid, another commuter, said: “The tyres should be in good condition because poorly maintained tyres would make it difficult for drivers to suddenly brake their cars. It is also important to reduce speed near traffic signals.” Many Twitter users used the platform to share safety tips for the gloomy weather, while others welcomed the favourable weather changes.

Ali Mahmood tweeted: “Loving the weather but a few seconds is all it takes to walk around the car and do a quick check to make sure all your lights are working.” Chris Raju tweeted: “Finally the weather is breezy, and I have been waiting for the rain for a long time.”

Joel Mathew tweeted: “Everyone pays attention to headlights and turn signals because you all want to be seen clearly as well as be able to see well.” Shaikh Harris tweeted, “Best weather to go for drives and walk in parks.” According to a study, when the weather changes, scenes of congestion and accidents increase on the roads and people need to change their driving habits in bad weather.

There are some recommendations for safe driving on the roads during rain by experts such as: before starting, make sure the car is clean; clean spaces to remove oils and dirt; clean windows inside and out, and check if the headlights and rear lights are working; drive slowly and carefully, and be sure to check tyres and wipers.
