Beggar jailed in Bahrain for assaulting police officer

The High Criminal Court of Appeal upheld a one-year prison sentence followed by deportation for a beggar who assaulted a policeman who was carrying out his duty as part of a security operation to eliminate vagrancy in Muharraq Governorate.

A police patrol was dispatched to an area in Qalali, Muharraq, where there had been reports of beggars as part of a combined effort to arrest them. The policeman approached the defendant for arrest after seeing him standing in front of a mosque.

The defendant made an attempt to flee when he sensed the approaching policeman. The victim managed to stop the defendant who tried to escape again by assaulting the policeman, but the latter managed to subdue him.

A report of the assault was issued and the defendant was referred to prosecution. The defendant tried to flee again, but the victim was able to stop him. Despite being attacked, the police officer was able to subdue him.

A report of the assault was issued and the defendant was referred to prosecution. He was charged with assaulting a member of security forces in September wherein the assault did not lead to the victim’s illness or inability to carry out duties for a period longer than 20 days.

The Court of First Instance ruled that the defendant be imprisoned for a year and deported permanently from the country afterwards. The Court of Appeal upheld this ruling.
