17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention opens in Indore

A 100-member delegation representing the Indian community in Bahrain took part in the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2023 that kick-started yesterday in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India.
Today, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the convention, which is happening in person for the first time since 2019.
Guyana President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali will be the chief guest and Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi the special guest of honour.
Yesterday, delegates from Bahrain interacted with V. Muraleedharan, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Parliamentary Affairs of India, on the sidelines of the event. Discussions focused on initiatives planned for the welfare of the Indian diaspora and matters concerning the Indian community in Bahrain.
Delegates from India arrived in Indore for the convention on Saturday and said they were overwhelmed by the warm welcome accorded to them. Over 3,500 diaspora members from nearly 70 countries have registered for the three-day convention with the theme: “Diaspora: Reliable partners for India’s progress in Amrit Kaal”.
The highlight of events yesterday was a plenary session on the “Role of Diaspora Youth in Innovations and New Technologies “ led by Anurag Thakur, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.
President Droupadi Murmu will tomorrow confer the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards 2023 and preside over the valedictory session.
The award recognises the exceptional contributions of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India. To underline the importance of safe, legal, orderly and skilled migration, PBD will also release commemorative stamps: ‘Surakshit Jaayen and Prashikshit Jayayen’.
PM Modi will also open the first-ever digital PBD Exhibition on the theme “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” to highlight the freedom fighter in India’s Independence. The PBD convention will have five thematic plenary sessions. Since 2015, the convention is held every two years to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India.
