Public health to fore as Bahrain celebrates sports day

All of Bahrain came together yesterday to celebrate the 7th edition of Bahrain Sports Day as part of a decision by the GCC Olympic Committees to organise a “sports day” in all GCC member states in February.

The three-day event, held for the second consecutive year by Bahrain Sport for all associations, kicked off yesterday at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir.

As part, HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, had allotted a half day off for all ministries, agencies and government institutions. On the occasion, the Director-General of the PMO, Hamad bin Yaqoob Al Mahmeed, highlighted the importance of embracing a culture of an active and healthy lifestyle, which contributes to further strengthening public health.

Al Mahmeed noted the Kingdom’s wide-ranging sports achievements, emphasising the commitment and support of the Representative of HM the King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and the First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Chairman of the General Sports Authority and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, to the sector.

RHF Secretary General Dr Mustafa Al Sayed highlighted the importance of regular exercise to maintain the overall health of the mind and body. He emphasised the importance of encouraging employees and associates to participate in athletic activity and boost mental and physical strength.

Minister of Transportation and Telecommunication Mohammed bin Thamer Al Kaabi also stressed the importance of exercising and promoting a healthy lifestyle to increase productivity at work. To mark the occasion and promote the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, Gulf Air Group hosted a range of activities at its headquarters, including football, basketball, tug of war, table tennis, and a fitness session.

The Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance organised activities for its staff and faculty around Bahrain Bay. The BIBF Director, Dr Ahmed Al Shaikh, stated, “The BIBF is proud to support the initiatives of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who has been a strong advocate for developing the sports sector in Bahrain.”

Information Minister, Dr Ramzan bin Abdulla Alnoaimi, said the Day reflects the Kingdom’s keenness in developing sports, led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
