Appeal hearing adjourned till Dec 14
The High Criminal Court has adjourned the appeal hearing of Al Wefaq Islamic Society Secretary General until December 14 after he failed to appear before the court. Ali Salman was earlier sentenced to four years in jail for publicly inciting hatred among a segment of society, insulting the Interior Ministry and inciting non-compliance with the law. However, due to lack of evidence, he was spared a heavier punishment after judges acquitted him of promoting to topple the regime with the use of force and threatening to resort to military force to change the political system.
The defendant, 49, was earlier referred to trial over his several public statements. Among the evidences presented against him were the recordings of public speeches between 2013-2014 that promoted political change, confronting state authorities, calls to stage unlawful protests, in addition to incitement to non-compliance with the law.
In it’s ruling, the High Criminal Court had highlighted several remarks he made publicly, including degrading the naturalised Bahraini citizens as well as terming them mercenaries.
