A Bahraini woman was granted a divorce by the High Sharia Court without the possibility of reconciliation on the grounds that after three years of marriage her husband started acting improperly, outside the bounds of customary and legal etiquette.
The woman’s lawyer, Aisha Janahi claimed that the husband began to use profane language to his wife, disparage her honor, and physically assault her. He also allegedly did not provide for her financially despite working and being well-off.
After they got married, she learned that he used prescription medications with dangerous side effects that led to addiction and repeated attempts at suicide by taking multiple medications at once.
As a result, he was sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment. Janahi stated that the Family Reconciliation Office made great efforts to bring them together and mend their relationship, but the organisation conceded that both parties are incompatible.
Their case was referred to the court, and a pleading was submitted that included numerous evidences of the harm caused to the wife, as well as repeated suicide attempts due to alcohol addiction.
The court heard the witnesses of both parties to the case. The prosecution witnesses testified how the husband physically and emotionally assaulted the wife several times. The husband acknowledged being mentally unwell and having previously attempted suicide.
