Speaker highlights India's vibrant democracy and need for UNSC reforms at IPU146

Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has described India as a "robust participatory democracy" with a vibrant multi-party system during his address at the 146th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Birla emphasised the unhindered rights of Members of Parliament (MPs) to express their views in Parliament, adding that India's long-standing view is that all global issues should be resolved peacefully through dialogue.
Birla highlighted India's parliamentarians debates on contemporary global challenges such as climate change, gender equality, sustainable development, and the Covid-19 pandemic. He stressed the importance of global institutions promoting peace, harmony, and justice for a just world order.
Calling for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to reflect the realities of a rapidly changing world, Birla said that reforms cannot be delayed any further.
He stressed the need for the subject to be included in future global agendas to contribute towards addressing challenges such as sustainable development, poverty, gender equality, and terrorism.
