WHO regional director hails Bahrain as ‘role model’ of health

WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Dr Ahmed bin Salem Al-Mandhari praised Bahrain for its exceptional achievements in the health and medical sectors during the inauguration of World Health Day.

He credited Bahrain’s high rankings to its robust system, advanced technical infrastructure, and evidence-based practices that align with global recommendations.

The event, which coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the World Health Organization, was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Lieutenant General Dr Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Health, Dr Jalila bint Al-Sayed Jawad Hassan, Minister of Health, and Dr Tasneem Ghaleb Atatreh, the representative of the WHO office in Bahrain.

Dr Al-Mandhari praised Bahrain for prioritizing primary care, and providing urgent and effective protection for emergency developments, as evidenced by the Kingdom’s swift response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also highlighted Bahrain’s success in the Healthy Cities Programme, with Manama declared the first healthy city in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, followed by Umm Al-Hassam, A’ali, Busaiteen - Al-Sayah, and other cities that will join the network of healthy cities.

Dr Al-Mandhari also commended Bahrain for its accomplishments in the Healthy Universities Programme, with five universities simultaneously awarded the title of “Healthy University” for the first time in the Mediterranean region.

He emphasized Bahrain’s efforts to enhance the skills of healthcare workers through high-quality academic and practical programs, including initiatives by the University of Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf University.

In conclusion, Dr Al-Mandhari appreciated Bahrain’s progress in the health sector and emphasized the need to continue working towards achieving the WHO’s vision of “Health for All” and improving public health.
