A Cameroonian woman has been sentenced to 10 years in jail in Bahrain for attempting to smuggle marijuana by hiding it inside dried shrimp and herbs.
The woman was arrested at the Bahrain International Airport with over a kilogram of marijuana concealed inside shrimp and dried herbs.
During interrogation, the woman admitted to using shrimp and herbs to cover the marijuana, thinking that she could easily evade detection during customs clearance procedures.
The woman had completed customs clearance procedures and collected her baggage at the Bahrain International Airport, but her actions under extreme stress gave her up, said customs officers.
Officers told the court they subjected the woman to further check-ups because she appeared nervous and was moving randomly inside the airport.
“So, we removed her to the red lane for a detailed examination, and before long we found the marijuana wrapped peculiarly, making it difficult to detect amid dried shrimps and herbs.”
The investigators further discovered that the woman was linked to a drug smuggling network that was active in Bahrain.
The Public Prosecution charged the woman with attempting to smuggle drugs into Bahrain.
Besides awarding jail terms, the High Criminal Court also slapped her with a BD 5,000 fine. The court also ordered her deportation once she completes her prison term.
