In the age of e-commerce, counterfeit cosmetics present a growing challenge, not only do they pose significant health risks to consumers, but they also raise serious legal concerns for brand manufacturers, distributors and retailers.

It is no secret that personal care is a huge business in Bahrain, but most people are unaware that the majority of listings on websites like Amazon aren’t actually for products that Amazon sells; rather, they are sold by third parties.

According to Dr Anita Sara Thampi, Dermatologist at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, makeup goods are reviewed, sold, and given out at unbelievable prices. Nobody verified whether these are genuine products, genuine merchants, or genuine products with contaminated pigment.

“Alarming cases of severe allergic reactions with redness and swelling of the face and eyes, recurrent painful and itchy pimples on the face, and in the case of lip products, discoloration of the lips with peeling of the skin and eventually causing discoloration even around the lips are the results of using these products,” Dr Anita said.

“In my opinion, “Skin first, makeup second” is the most appropriate quote to begin this discussion with as a dermatologist.” There are a handful of magic product companies with their magic spot correctors and whitening solutions, which promise to give you fairer or lighter skin.

“What many people don’t realise is that most of the time these products use cortisone or bleaching agents in their products, which causes the skin to lighten as a side effect of the product,” Dr Anita stated.

“Once the product is discontinued or out of supply, we develop unpleasant lumps on the face that look harsh. “The patient has tried and tested a lot of other things by the time they visit the doctor, but they are unaware of what triggered these reactions.”

To address these challenges, Dr Anita stressed that first make sure the seller is an authentic company, do your due diligence and research on the seller and the products with a look into the ingredients, and then compare it with other sellers, their products.

“Secondly, always make sure you give a few minutes in between each of your make routine before going to the next step to avoid piling on of the pigment, also causing blocking of the pores, resulting in acne as well.

“Lastly, hydrated skin gives the best result when we apply makeup on it. So make sure you are hydrated well, by drinking enough water, moisturising your skin regularly and avoiding hot water to wash your face which sucks.
