With the unforgiving summer temperatures already setting in, staying hydrated has become a challenging task for many.

We are also reminded to remain hydrated at all times. However, while it’s easy for us to carry a bottle of water or turn on the AC to cool us down, others cannot do either of those.

The concern is for our furry friends, who roam the streets and aren’t that privileged. One could only imagine how much hotter it’s going to get in the coming months.

To quench their thirst, these animals often resort to dirty puddles, open drains, and sewage lines, as they get easily dehydrated in the summer.

Stray cats and dogs desperately looking for water sources have already become a sad sight in Gudaibiya, Mahooz, Juffair, and Azkar. The cool thing, however, is that volunteer groups and animal lovers have also started keeping water bowls in these neighbourhoods.

However, they have reported that this is not enough, as the water evaporates quickly, leaving the animals thirsty. “Volunteers feed and give them water, but the water is insufficient and evaporates rapidly,” an expat who lives in Gudaibiya told The Daily Tribune.

He further pointed out that most of the time, these voiceless creatures are seen taking shelter under trees or vehicles to escape the wrath of the impending summer. But then, this has also caused people to inadvertently inflict life-threatening injuries on them as they fail to notice these animals while driving away.

Animal advocates and environmentalists warn people to look under their vehicles before firing them up. They also told The Daily Tribune that summer is also that time of the year when several stray animals lose their lives through accidents as they roam around and cross highways in search of shelter.

Given the situation, animal advocates also point out that there’s a lot people can do to help and ensure that these poor creatures live through this summer. One thing people can do is keep some water out in a bowl for these hapless creatures to quench their thirst.

“We are already doing it,” they said, adding that the effort is to offer water three times a day throughout the summer. “We welcome others to join this initiative,” they said.
