Be wary of cybercriminals

Recently, there has been a spate of media reports about cybercriminals targeting individuals and duping them, often resulting in financial losses and mental agony for the victims.

“Individuals and families do not often take sufficient precautions such as updating operating systems to the latest versions or installing virus  scanners, hence are more vulnerable to these attacks.

Additionally, we all like things ‘free’, whether it is an app or a too-good-to-be-true offer by a cyber attacker trying to trick you to download some malicious software (malware) to a device,” said CEO of Sysprove Consulting, Ravi Jayasundera, during a seminar recently organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham).

He added that people use pirated software, having vulnerabilities or are susceptible to attack. Also, many respond to emails which may contain malicious code, which once opened can infect devices and allow an intruder to access the system and data. By installing a good virus scanner and an internet security suite, the users can prevent most of the attack, he added.

If a person suspects foul play, he or she should disconnect the device from the internet, change passwords, run a security scan and if needed, reset the device to factory settings, he opined.

He also warned that more sophisticated attacks could be expected in the coming days and social engineering tactics would be used to manipulate people to gain entry to their digital space.
