The high season for one of the most beloved fruits has finally arrived. According to traders, Bahrain has become the most prominent mango market, with figures climbing each year.
The mango season starts in May and continues until the end of August. In recent years, the market has witnessed expansion to the Middle East, with trade figures shooting up.
Last year, the king of fruits was more costly by nearly 30 to 50 per cent due to low production that was costly this year and erratic weather. Additionally, exporters have reported greater demand for Alphonso mangoes, compared to the other traditional mangoes in the Bahrain markets.
Speaking to The Daily Tribune, Mina Supermarket area manager Muhammed Aslam said: “The season has only just begun, yet there is already a growing demand for mangoes." Mangoes are a great summer fruit, and we expect our customers to enjoy the fresh mangoes.
“There is no such thing as the desire for mangoes coming exclusively from a certain country; it also depends on the area. For example, people who are living in Sitra or construction areas are mostly blue-collar workers and expats so they would prefer mangoes from India and Pakistan.
“There are several types of mangoes arriving from various nations, including Alphonso, which costs somewhat more than other mangoes and starts at BD2.7. “Next are mangoes from Yemen, India, Kenya, and Pakistan, and prices fluctuate based on demand for mangoes.”
