Make Bahrain a hub of health care tourism: MPs

With a view to making Bahrain a hub of health care tourism, the parliamentarians yesterday held extended discussions in the matter during the Council of Representatives’ weekly meeting. The topic cropped up when they discussed the government’s reply to a proposal to set and follow a strategy to make Bahrain a destination for health care tourism.

In the discussion, one of the presenters of the proposals, MP Ali Al Ateesh accused the Health Ministry of not having a clear strategy to develop health care services. “Health Ministry constantly informs us that it’s following certain strategies to improve the health care sector in Bahrain. While inquiring about the country’s current situation, it provided us with statistics conducted in 2013,” Al Ateesh alleged.

MP Dr. Jameela Al Sammak said, “In its reply to the proposal, the Ministry said that priority was to serve citizens and residents at this point of time, more than rehabilitating the country into a health care tourism country. It’s a spiritless reply.”

Dr. Al Sammak revealed that 30,000 patients are going to private and government hospitals, stating that around 2,500 patients are being treated on a monthly basis. “When Jordan started investing in health care tourism, it contributed two percent to the economy and rapidly the percentage increased to 11pc into the country’s budget. We look forward to achieving the same in Bahrain,” she explained.
