Bahrain grants Brunei data sovereignty, signs six deals

Bahrain and Brunei Darussalam signed a series of cooperation agreements yesterday encompassing media, cultural, higher education, women’s affairs and political consultations - a move further bolstering friendly ties and bilateral cooperation.

Bahrain also granted Brunei sovereignty over the information of its subscribers in the cloud computing centres in Bahrain.

The deals followed talks yesterday by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and his accompanying delegates at the Gudaibiya Palace.

During talks, Sultan Bolkiah also expressed interest in investing in the Kingdom to serve the interest of the two countries.

Earlier, a series of 21-round gun salutes were fired by soldiers in honour of Sultan Bolkiah as His Majesty King Hamad rolled out a red-carpet welcome at the Gudaibiya Palace.

Sultan Bolkiah, who arrived at the palace accompanied by a group of horsemen, then shook hands with HM King.

Talks by Sultan was in the presence of HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs, National Security Adviser, His Royal Highness Prince Abdul-Mateen, Speakers of the Shura and Representatives Councils, and members of the two delegations.

The meetings mulled ways to boost bilateral ties as well as regional and international developments of common concern.

During talks, His Majesty said Sultan’s visit would contribute to boost the strength of ties and partnerships between the two countries, as HM also urged ways to expand them to other sectors, including commercial, cultural and tourism.

The meeting further affirmed efforts to enhance cooperation and take advantage of the opportunities in various sectors by establishing joint projects and programmes.

Their highnesses also stressed the importance of activating the agreements and memorandums of understandings signed between the two countries in vital areas.

HM King further praised the progress and development achieved by Brunei Darussalam, stressing the Kingdom’s top role in serving the causes of the Islamic world.

Sultan Bolkiah expressed pride in Bahrain’s effort to strengthen ties, stressing his keenness to consolidate historical relations with the Kingdom and invest in various sectors of the Kingdom.

Six deals

Following talks, ministers from both sides endorsed six deals.

The deal for political consultation and cooperation was signed by Minister of Finance and National Economy, Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, and Erywan Pehin Yusof, the Minister of Foreign Affairs II.

Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) Hala Mohammed Jaber Al Ansari and Nazmi Mohamad, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, signed the deal for cooperating on women’s affairs.

Bahrain and Brunei also decided to extend cooperation in the media sector. Signing the deal was Information Minister Dr Ramzan bin Abdullah Al-Noaimi and Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, the Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II.

The deal for education was signed by Education Minister Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma’a and Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Md Salleh, the Minister of Education.

Finally, a certificate granting Brunei Darussalam the right of sovereignty over the information of its subscribers in cloud computing centers in Bahrain was issued.

It was signed by Minister of Finance and National Economy Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa and Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, the Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II.

Later, HM King held a lunch banquet in honour of Sultan Bolkiah and his delegation.
