Riffa Central Market renovation 60 percent complete, set for reopening this year

The improvement works at Riffa Central Market have reached 60% completion and are expected to be finished by the end of this year, said a top-ranking official from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs.

Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Undersecretary of Municipal Affairs at the Ministry, affirmed that the project is progressing as planned.

He was speaking during an inspection tour of the project areas along with Abdullah Abdul Latif, Chairman of the Municipal Council of the Southern Region; Rawia Al-Mannai, the Assistant Undersecretary for Joint Municipal Services; Issa Al-Buainain, the Director General of the Municipality of the Southern Region; and other ministry officials.

Explaining, he said the ministry is committed to developing central markets in accordance with the latest safety and technology standards to meet the growing needs of citizens.

The ministry also highlighted the significance of Riffa Central Market, stating that it directly impacts a large segment of the population who rely on the market daily for fish, meat, and vegetables.

Abdullah Ibrahim Abdullatif, Chairman of the Southern Municipal Council, emphasised the pivotal role of the central market in ensuring food security for the residents of the Southern Governorate.

Outlining the ongoing works, Issa Al-Buainain, Director General of the Municipality of the Southern Region, said they include expanding the current building of the market to an area of 2,323 square metres. This expansion will accommodate 40 vegetable stalls, 13 stalls for fish, 7 stalls for meat, and two stalls for chicken.

Other improvements involve enhancing the main facade of Mina Al-Zad Markets, providing sanitary facilities for visitors and sellers, and establishing a 100-square-metre cafeteria.

Al-Buainain added that a temporary market has been set up to serve vendors until the completion of the development work. He further assured that the alternative site offers the same number of stalls for vegetable, fruit, fish, and meat sellers.

Khaled Shajra, a member of the Municipal Council, praised the efficient progress of the project and commended the continuous communication, coordination, and follow-up by the Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture Affairs and the Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs.
