The Migrant Worker’s Protection Society (MWPS) welcomes the General Union of Domestic Workers in Bahrain’s decision to establish The General Union of Domestic Workers, a union for domestic workers in Bahrain.
As a result, the maids in Bahrain would have a more unified voice. The MWPS applauded the decision as a "significant development."
MWPS chairwoman Mona Almoayyed said that the society has dealt with several situations of abuse and exploitation faced by housemaids over the years and that it has always advocated for them since its inception in 2005.
"The formation of this official trade union is an achievement, thanks to the coordinated efforts of different international organisations and institutions, putting Bahrain at the forefront of commitment to upholding and protecting human rights principles globally. Housemaids also deserve to be treated like any other workers in Bahrain under the Labour Law."
