The University of Bahrain and the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) have joined hands for scientific and technical cooperation in various key sectors, especially in advancing research in the development of scientific applications of aluminium alloys.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Fouad Mohammed Al-Ansari, President of UoB, and Charlotte Lindbergh, Director of International Relations at CERN. Dr. Al-Ansari said the deal will allow Bahraini researchers to gain valuable opportunities, enabling scientists, researchers, engineers, teachers, students, and technicians to benefit from CERN schools and programmes.
These include the School of Accelerators, the School of Computing, the European School of Physics, and the Summer Student Programme at CERN. He said the collaboration also opens up avenues for joint research and development in the scientific application of aluminium alloys, as well as the integration of education and training with the national industry.
The signing ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Dr Youssef Abdulkarim Bucheery, Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Shaikh Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research, Dr Shaikha Haifa bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Dean of the College of Engineering, Walid Salah AlMiraj, the Director of the Policy Department in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maryam AlShorouki, Director of Research Projects at the Shaikh Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research, Martin Gastal, CERN Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa, and several members of the Bahraini diplomatic mission in Geneva.
The University of Bahrain students and employees on scholarships from the university, who are currently engaged in research projects at CERN, were also present. It is noteworthy that UoB has been involved in the muon detector experiment since 2019 and has since established a partnership for cooperation projects with CERN through collaboration with the Sheikh Ibrahim bin Mohammed Centre for Culture and Research.
It’s worth knowing that, based on Volza’s Bahrain Import data, Bahrain received 1.4K shipments of aluminium alloy, which were imported by 44 Bahrain Importers from 40 Suppliers. The majority of Bahrain’s aluminium alloy imports originate from Belgium, India, and Germany. Among the importers, the United States takes the lead with 322,625 shipments, followed by India with 242,441 shipments, and Mexico in the third position with 153,248 shipments.
